Abstract:As one of the crucial elements of space in the classical garden, the corridor plays an indispensable role in space and time organization, form expression, and artistic conception creation. This paper examines the Couple’s Garden Retreat in?Suzhou classical gardens, where the corridor area takes up the most garden space. To define the corridor space, this study uses the relationship between the graph base and generates the vector plane plan of the Couple’s Garden Retreat both with and without corridors. Then, based on the theoretical basis of space syntax, Depthmap software is used to visualize the connection value, entrance depth value, and integration degree of the view space of the Couple’s Garden Retreat. Through quantitative comparative analysis, this paper summarizes three key characteristics of corridors in shaping space: strengthening the spatial sequence of views and optimizing the moving line; increasing the?space damping?and enriching the depth of field; and integrating the garden node pattern and softening the boundary. The findings of this study provide valuable references for utilizing corridor elements in shaping space in modern architecture and landscape planning and design practice, as well as for the inheritance of Suzhou’s classical garden culture and garden art.
