Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization in China, the old zoos in most cities have slowly entered the urban area. However, due to limited funds and venues, cage-type exhibitions still occupy the dominant position, lacking other activities other than animal viewing, and animal welfare also needs to be improved urgently. This article summarizes the development history of urban zoos and analyzes the negative in site, research, and revenue of current Chinese urban zoos and their positive in passenger flow, transportation, and location. Then, combining the examples of the renewal and development of foreign urban zoos, the paper considers the present trends of urban zoos in terms of functional layout, transportation routes, special themes, tour methods, animal welfare, and popular science and commercial operations. Taking the renewal of Hangzhou Zoo as an example, we explore the sustainable development path of similar urban zoos in China.
