Abstract:The world is facing the challenge of the aging population , and the health condition of the elderly has become an important factor affecting the development of a country. Urban natural environments have been demonstrated to have great benefits to the mental restoration of the elderly. However, the study of the specific characteristics of urban natural environments that are the most restorative for the elderly is still lacking. Four types of the landscape were selected in this study to explore the most restorative landscape characteristics for the elderly based on the eight Perceived Sensory Dimensions (PSDs). The results showed that: (1) Partly-closed green space and blue space were the most restorative landscape types for the elderly. (2) Environments with more refuge, prospect, serene, social, and less nature can improve the psychological restoration of the elderly. (3) Mental condition had a significant effect on psychological restoration. Closed green space was significantly less restorative for the elderly with bad mental conditions than those with good mental conditions. These findings can provide useful guidelines for restorative environmental design for the elderly in the future.
